WHAT IS AN ADAPTOGEN?
Adaptogens are Nature’s non-toxic “super-herbs”– flowers and plants with naturally occurring properties that counteract the negative effects of inflammation and stress in the body. One of the most powerful adaptogens is Rhodiola rosea. Ashwagandha, Ginseng, St. John’s Wort, Holy Basil, and Cordyceps are also very powerful adaptogens. All herbs have adaptogenic properties; however, only a select few can truly be called adaptogens.
WHEN SHOULD I TAKE MY HERBAL TINCTURE?
Your herbal healing experience will be maximized if you take your tincture first thing in the morning, with water, on an empty stomach. Avoid taking herbal medicines within 30 minutes of taking caffeine (i.e.: coffee, tea, energy drinks, supplements, work-out powders, etc.) because caffeine reduces the herb’s efficacy. If you have purchased Rhodiola rosea, avoid taking it before going to bed or you may have difficulty sleeping. Please refer to the tincture’s label for specific dosing instructions.
Why is it suggested I take my herbal medicine on an empty stomach?
The main reason we suggest taking your herbal medicine on an empty stomach is so your bloodstream absorbs it more efficiently. Once you've eaten food, your body needs to utilize its resources to break food down for energy. If energy is diverted from medicine absorption to food digestion, the medicinal effects of the tincture's active compounds are slightly diminished. You can take your tincture anytime up to five minutes before a meal. If you forget, and need to take it after a meal, it’s ideal if you wait an hour or two. If this is not possible, don’t worry. Take it as you are able.
How often should I take my herbal medicine?
Every herb is unique, and every person is unique; therefore, dosing frequency is unique. Many factors including your body type, age, and lifestyle (i.e.: sleep, diet, activity levels, etc.), play into how often herbal medicine is required. Please refer to the tincture’s label for specific dosing instructions.
How much herbal medicine should I take?
Every herb is unique, and every person is unique; therefore, dosing amounts are unique. Many factors including your body type, age, and lifestyle (i.e.: sleep, diet, activity levels, etc.), play into how much herbal medicine is required. Please refer to the tincture’s label for specific dosing instructions.
How long do I need to take my herbal medicine to start experiencing its benefits?
Every herb is unique, and every person is unique; therefore, the time it takes to notice the healing effects of the herb is unique. Many factors including your body type, age, and lifestyle (i.e.: sleep, diet, activity levels, etc.), play into how soon you will feel the herb's healing effects.
Assuming you take the medicine as recommended, it typically takes most people about 1-3 days for their bodies to begin healing. Since herbal medicines are water-soluble and have high bioavailability, you may start experiencing the benefits immediately.
How long will the herbal medicine stay in my body after I take it?
The active compounds in your herbal medicine generally remain in your body for about 2-3 days.
Are herbal medicines suitable for everyone?
Since herbal medicines are natural, they are suitable for most individuals. That said, we strongly recommend you consult your naturopath or healthcare practitioner before using any herbal remedy; especially if you are: pregnant or breastfeeding, have allergies to specific herbs, take hormone replacements, or take any type of pharmaceutical medication. Always refer to the tincture’s label for warnings and contraindications. Please review our Medical Disclaimer for further clarity on our herbal offerings and their suitability.
How should I store my herbal tincture?
Store your herbal tincture in a convenient and cool, dark place, such as a bathroom cupboard, kitchen cupboard, or fridge. Sunlight and warm temperatures can damage the effectiveness of the herbal tincture, which is why we put our tinctures in sterilized, dark amber bottles. The dark glass protects the herbal tincture from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) light rays. Do not freeze the herbal tincture, and do not store it out in the open near a window, or near a heat source (such as an oven or dishwasher) as it can damage the tincture and decrease it potency.
What are the ingredients in Wilderland’s herbal medicines?
Wilderland’s herbal medicines contain only three ingredients:
- Regenerative organic or sustainably wildcrafted, Canadian-grown herbs (the active medicinal ingredient),
- Distilled Yukon mountain-spring water, and
- Certified organic ethanol alcohol.
Why do herbal medicines contain alcohol?
Alcohol is the best-known solvent for herbs because it extracts the bioactive compounds from the plant that are not water-soluble.
For centuries, both water and alcohol in combination have been necessary to extract all the active ingredients of herbs and make them fully “bioavailable.” A solution of water alone is not enough. Alcohol is the best-known edible solvent that can effectively extract the required ingredients from the plant. In addition, alcohol stabilizes the herb and acts as a preservative. For more on the various solvents used to extract plant medicine, visit our article "Everything You Want to Know About Herbal Tincture."
I am sensitive to alcohol or choose alcohol-free products; is there anything I can do to remove the alcohol?
If you want to remove the alcohol from a tincture, simply bring one cup of cold water to a boil. Take the boiling water off the stove, add your dose of tincture, and let the mixture sit until it is at room temperature. This will evaporate most of the alcohol. Once cool, return the mixture to the bottle and dose as instructed.
Does Wilderland have alcohol-free herbal medicines I can purchase?
No Wilderland does not provide alcohol-free tinctures. Studies have proven alcohol-free tinctures do not work as effectively as alcohol-based tinctures, which is the main reason why we do not provide them. There has also yet to be any demand for them from our customers. That said, we recognize some people have alcohol sensitivities or other reasons to avoid choosing alcohol-based products, which we fully respect. As our company grows, we will continue to monitor interest. If alcohol-free tinctures are highly desired, we may decide to offer this option in the future.
I can see sediment at the bottom of my herbal tincture, is this normal? Is it still safe to take?
YES! This is the good stuff! Sediment is natural, normal, and completely safe. Wilderland’s herbal medicines are infused using traditional means. The sediment you see is comprised of minuscule particles of the herb that were too small to be removed during the filtration process and settled afterward. These particles are natural and an entirely safe by-product. If sediment is bothersome to look at, we recommend shaking the tincture before each use.
How does Wilderland process its herbal medicines? How are they made?
Over a decade of research has gone into deriving Wilderland’s standardized herbal tincture formulas. Our fresh herb infusion methodology is significantly better than dried herb infusion, and is designed to obtain the maximum quality and potency out of each and every plant.
We opt for the standard method over the folk method for its precision and consistency. Our extraction ratios vary from herb to herb, typically ranging between 1:4 and 1:6. We long-age brew—timing our extractions over the course of two lunar cycles, and we use a manually operated press to extract our tinctures. We only manufacture in small batches to ensure the maximum amount of love and care goes into each bottle. Compare our tinctures to “the other guys” and we believe, you will feel more love in each drop.
Are Wilderland’s herbal medicines Organic?
Absolutely — and we go beyond traditional organic standards. Our plant medicines, including herbal tinctures, are regenerative organic. In addition, we do not use any pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizers and we test our soil regularly for heavy metals, pesticides, herbicides (from airborne drift), and microbial contaminants.
When sourcing third-party ingredients, like alcohol for our tinctures, we exclusively partner with Certified Organic suppliers. Like you, we believe that harmful chemicals have no place in our bodies, which is why we’re committed to using only the cleanest, highest-quality ingredients.
